Bidh dleastanas aig gach neach iad fhèin a ghiùlan ann an dòigh èifeachdach agus airson ghnìomhan a leithid còcaireachd agus cur an-àirde teanta a dhèanamh dhaibh fhèin\, mar phàirt de sgioba agus fo stiùir iùilichean Spòrs Gàidhlig. \nA thuilleadh air a sin\, bidh uallach air gach com-pàirtiche oidhirp a dhèanamh gus àrainneachd Ghàidhlig a chumail an-àirde. ‘S ann air na tursan mòra\, diana seo a chì sinn an t-adhartas agus misneachadh as motha a thaobh Gàidhlig\, ach cha tig sin mura bi a’ bhuidheann gu lèir deònach a’ Ghàidhlig a bhruidhinn. \nTha teans aig deireadh na cuairte gum bi cothrom air beagan spòrs-uisge\, a leithid bòrd-seasaimh no claiseachd. Bidh seo a-rèir clàr-ama agus na h-aimsir\, agus fo stiùir iùilichean Spòs Gàidhlig\, a tha le teisteanas na cur-seachadan seo a lìbhrigeadh. \nBidh am plana seo a-rèir na h-aimsir. Tha Spòrs Gàidhlig a’ glèidheil na còrach an t-slighe no an turas atharrachdainn mar a mheasas iad iomchaidh. Tha Spòrs Gàidhlig cuideachd a’ glèidheil na còrach àite a dhiùltadh do neach sam bith nach eil iad a’ meas a bhith aig ìre comais no slàinte a’ chuairt adhartach seo a choileanadh gu sàbhailte. \nFosgailte gu S3-6 a tha fileanta sa Ghàidhlig. \n \nJoin us on Spòrs Gàidhlig’s big summer mountain challenge 2026! \nOver six days\, between 20th and 25th July 2026 we will embark on an epic journey through the mountains\, and glens of Sutherland and Wester Ross\, one of the most rugged and remote areas of the Highlands. We will learn mountain skills and build confidence by undertaking a real challenge as part of a group. We will camp for five nights and move through the mountainous environment carrying everything we need to be self-sufficient. The exact route will depend on a number of factors\, but we will pass through the Alladale Wilderness Reserve\, reach Munro summits such as Seana-Bhràigh and visit *secret* bothies\, well off the beaten track. Throughout the trip we will be spoilt with magnificent views of the Highland landscape only seen by those willing to put in a special effort. \nThe group will meet at 11:30 at Comunn na Gàidhlig’s office in Inverness on Monday 20th July. We will prepare equipment\, pack our bags and depart in Spòrs Gàidhlig’s minibus to the start of our expedition on the shore at Bonar Bridge. We will then spend 5 days on a spectacular mountain walking and camping adventure\, travelling westwards through glens and over remote peaks to arrive finally on the West Coast in Ullapool on Friday 24th July. Here we will get a well-deserved dinner at the Cèilidh Place and stay at the village campsite. In the morning of Saturday 25th August we will do some exploring locally (maybe even an easy paddle-boarding or gorge scrambling excursion!) before returning to Inverness in Spòrs Gàidhlig’s minibus. We will be back at the office in Inverness for 15:00. \nThis trip for competent young people will offer great opportunities for personal development. Each individual will have a responsibility to work effectively as part of the team and carry out tasks like cooking camp meals and putting up their tents under the guidance of Spòrs Gàidhlig’s instructors. \n \nGàidhlig \nThis is a trip for fluent Gaelic speakers. It is on multi-day trips such as these that we see the greatest impact with regards to participants’ confidence in using Gaelic socially\, and their esteem for the language. Under Spòrs Gàidhlig’s ethos\, we aim to create a fully-immersive Gaelic environment\, which requires the involvement of the entire party to succeed. Every participant must understand therefore that they have a reponsibility to uphold this environment and make every effort to use Gaelic. \nHow difficult will the trip be? \nThis trip is suitable for active individuals in S3-6 who are prepared for a challenge in the outdoors. \nParticipants should expect to be tired at the end of each day. A multi-day journey like this requires concerted effort to complete\, both while travelling and in evening tasks relating to setting up camp\, preparing food and dealing with inclement weather. We will be moving in mountainous terrain while carrying everything we need to look after ourselves\, including sleeping bags\, tents and stoves. \nWe will aim to reach Munro summits on some days\, and the trip will include significant elevation gain as weather allows. \nThe committing and challenging nature of this expedition means that it is not suitable for those who do not have a genuine interest in the activity. We would ask that participants understand the challenges that will be involved and\, simply put\, actually want to be there. \nWhat safety precautions do you take? \nSpòrs Gàidhlig’s instructors are highly experienced and are formally qualified to the appropriate level to be delivering these activities. In this case\, they hold the Summer Mountain Leader award or higher and a valid outdoor first aid certificate. Spòrs Gàidhlig is proud to be the only Gaelic organisation to hold an AALA licence. \nEach instructor carries a first-aid kit\, and where appropriate\, a walkie talkie/radio for communication within the group. They will also have mobile phones which can be used where coverage allows\, and a PLB in the group. \nTrips are flexible. Routes can be amended to adapt to Scotland’s highly changeable weather and instructors’ judgement of the group’s capabilities. The priority is always getting everyone back safely\, even if that means not fulfilling an objective. If this happens\, it is often a more valuable learning experience than an easy success! \n \nWill you explain how equipment is used? \nBoth for safety and participants’ enjoyment of the trip\, full briefings will be given on all equipment. Spòrs Gàidhlig’s instructors will ensure that everyone knows how to safely use their stove\, and use of these will be monitored. Help will be provided with setting up tents where this is required\, and throughout the trip participants will learn how to effectively look after themselves in mountainous environments. \nWhat equipment do you provide? \n\nDry bags\nTent\nSleeping bag\nFoam camping mat\nCamping stoves and fuel\nFood for 3 meals each day. (Participants should bring any additional snacks they might want)\nFull waterproofs\, warm layers\, rucksacks\, etc\, if required.\n\nA full kit list will be provided upon signing up to the trip. \nAn online briefing meeting will be arranged for participants and parents approximately 3 weeks before the trip takes place. \nOpen to Gaelic-speaking teenagers in S3-S6. \nSpòrs Gàidhlig reserves the right to refuse a place on this trip to anyone they do not feel meets the required level of skill\, fitness or commitment to maintaining the Gaelic environment within the group. \nThis trip would qualify as a suitable practice expedition for the Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Spòrs Gàidhlig aim to create a complete a fully-immersive Gaelic environment\, where young people can hear and use the language in informal settings and in novel environments. It is during multi-day events such as these that we see the greatest impact with regards to participants’ confidence in using Gaelic socially\, and their esteem for the language\, but for this to work requires the commitment of the entire party. Every participant must understand therefore that they have a reponsibility to uphold this environment and make every effort to use Gaelic. \nHow difficult will the camp’s activities be? \nThis trip is suitable for active individuals in S2-4 who are prepared for a challenge in the outdoors. \nParticipants should expect to be tired at the end of each day. A multi-day camp like this requires concerted effort to complete not only the day’s excursions but also evening tasks relating to preparing food\, managing equipment and looking after our accommodation. \nWhat safety precautions do you take? \nSpòrs Gàidhlig’s instructors are highly experienced and are formally qualified to the appropriate level to be delivering these activities. \nEach instructor carries a first-aid kit\, and where appropriate\, a walkie talkie/radio for communication within the group. They will also have a mobile phone which can be used where coverage allows and a Garmin InReach PLB for backup. \n \nWhat equipment do you provide? \n\nFood for 3 meals each day.\nAll technical equipment (paddleboards\, wetsuits etc)\nWe can provide sleeping bags for use in the bunkhouse\, or participants are welcome to bring their own.\n\nA full kit list will be provided upon signing up to the trip. \nAn online briefing meeting will be arranged for participants and parents approximately 3 weeks before the trip takes place. \nOpen to Gaelic-speaking teenagers in S2-S4 after the 2026 summer holidays. \nWhat have past participants at Campa nan Torran said? \n“It was an amazing opportunity for the children to spend a week immersed in Gaelic and doing really fantastic activities that challenged them. They will have amazing memories of it\, and will have learned so many skills from the activities and in terms of their Gaelic.“ \n“My daughter loved every minute of it! The tutors were excellent\, the accommodation was great\, the food was fantastic\, the activities were exciting and fun!“ \n“My son came home speaking much more Gaelic than before. It has significantly increased the likelihood of him using Gaelic with his friends\, especially the group of friends who were at the camp together – they got used to speaking to each other in Gaelic and that has become much more the norm for them. The tutors are excellent role models for the children in terms of speaking Gaelic – they are seeing people outside of school or their own home speaking Gaelic – young\, ‘cool'(!) people – and this makes them much more likely to use it themselves.“ \n“I was told it was the best food! Lasagna was mentioned many times over.” \n“Bha ar mac cho toilichte air a’ champa! Chan eil e a’ bruidhinn air càil eile aig ceann na seachdain!” \nSpòrs Gàidhlig reserves the right to refuse a place on this trip to anyone they do not feel meets the required level of skill\, fitness or commitment to maintaining the Gaelic environment within the group. \n** This camp may be attended by a researcher from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig\, and will form part of the fieldwork for their PhD\, looking at the impact of Gaelic residential camps for teenagers. Further information on this will be sent out to participants closer to the time\, and participation in the research is not mandatory for those attending the camp. **
